Word of mouth is a powerful resource. Often when you ask your friends or family for such a referral you are bound to get a list of viable choices. We often think that we have to make a scheduled check up appointment or new patient appointment in order to do this research. This is not true however. You can call the office and ask to make an appointment to speak with the doctor first. They should be more than willing to set aside thirty minutes to speak with a potential patient. This should occur without charge. Being comfortable with your physician is extremely important in regards to your health.

It is wise when preparing to find an OBGYN to make a list of your specific needs in that physician. Every woman has a different list of needs when it comes to this area of medical expertise. Depending on the stage of life you are in your needs will very drastically. A woman in childbearing years will have far different needs than that of a woman who is in that later stage in life where menopause is becoming an issue to be confronted. Whichever your needs are these needs will help you formulate your questions for a potential OBGYN.

Many people think that they have to make an appointment for a check up in order to talk to a physician. This is a time when you should be able to and should make a priority of making an appointment to just speak to a physician regarding any specific needs you may have at the time. Knowing that your OBGYN has the ability and knowledge to treat and discuss openly options pertaining to specific medical needs is reassuring at the very least. If there are no specific medical needs that you want addressed then making an appointment for a general check up may be all you need to do to feel comfortable.

Specific medical needs will require tough questions be asked from your physician. Knowing your physician is not afraid to discuss new treatment options as well as alternative medicine can be very important. If you are dealing with a physician whom does not want to explore new options or even discuss them with you, you may want to reconsider that choice. Feeling comfortable and safe with your physician can really keep other medical issues at bay.

Whether you are confronting a medical situation that need immediate attention or are simply doing preventative care it is important to be your own advocate. Be open and honest with your OBGYN. Share with them your concerns and thoughts on treatments or preventative approaches. This relationship should be one in which you are comfortable discussing all options.
