Pulse oximetry basically involves monitoring blood oxygenation. Oxygen saturation should always be above 95 percent. Cms pulse oximeters are non-invasive medical devices that are used by health care workers to monitor the level of oxygen in patients blood to ensure it does not drop below levels that are safe. These devices are important in any areas where the level of oxygen in the patient body is important to monitor. So they are used in emergency and intensive care, operations, and treatment and recovery in hospital wards.

These devices are made in such a way that they are able to make slight detections on deficiency of oxygen flow in the body. The initial machine was made 1890s and from then it is still being used. The operation of this machine is as follows; the device has a tiny probe that is attached to the patient body, and specifically in areas that they have enough blood flow. The body parts which it is commonly attached to are either the earlobe or finger.

This monitor is then attached to a separate computerized unit whose work is majorly to display the readings. Inside the probe there is a light emitter that sends out two streams of light. One is red and the other infrared. These steams of light emitted are received and measured by a photo detector, which is located opposite the emitter.

Oxygenated hemoglobin typically absorbs a greater amount of infrared light while allowing the red light to pass through. On the other hand, the deoxygenated blood absorbs more of red lights and allow more of infrared to pass through. An oxygen monitor can calculate the level of oxygenation present by determining by calculating the amount of light absorbed by the hemoglobin at the two different wavelengths.

If an oxygen monitor detects any change in the level of oxygen of a patient under anesthesia, then it sounds an alarm. This is important because, a heart failure and drain damage can occur if the human body is starved of oxygen in as little time as three minutes. This is why early detection is quite important.

A healthy body should have at least 95 percent of oxygen saturation. In case of any slight fall of even one percent, these monitoring devices are able to detect it. It is good that the oxygen monitoring devices were discovered. Before then, the healthcare specialists would only detect the oxygen starvation when it is too late and the patient is already losing it.

There are different types of oximeters, and they include pediatric which can be wrist, handheld, and finger oxygen monitor. Pediatric oxygen monitors are designed for children producing, and they produce very accurate results. They have features that help in determining the best finger for testing and position. These devices were once too large and expensive for patients to have in their home, but now there are portable and affordable oxygen monitors in the market today.

While there are many models of cms oxygen monitors available in the market today, the most effective ones are finger models. The best part about the modern finger model is that they are affordable. You can get one starting from 30 dollars, including shipping. Anesthesiologists use these devices in the treatment of pneumonia and neonatal blindness among other illnesses.
